Application
Pyrantel Pamoate is a neuromuscular blocking agent that causes spasmodic paralysis of the worm and its elimination from the body. It also depolarises individual cells of the worm, increasing the frequency of peak potentials emitted and the muscle tone, resulting in the loss of the worm's voluntary activity.Additionally, it inhibits cholinesterase and causes acetylcholine to accumulate.This leads to its significant nicotinic-like activity.The main difference between pyrantel pamoate and piperazine is the speed of action.Pyrantel pamoate causes a rapid contraction followed by paralysis and immobility.It is effective in treating roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, and mixed infections, with the greatest efficacy against hookworms.
