Application
Animals derive their energy mainly from the oxidation of fats and carbohydrates. The heart, in particular, relies heavily on fatty acids for energy. However, fatty acids cannot enter the mitochondria directly through the inner mitochondrial membrane to undergo β-oxidation. Instead, they must enter in the form of acylcarnitines. Therefore, carnitine can be used as a carrier for the β-oxidation of fatty acids, particularly long-chain fatty acids. This plays a crucial role in the speed of their oxidation and energy supply, promoting the growth and development of animals. Furthermore, if an adequate amount of L-carnitine is added to the animal feed, it can also decrease the synthesis of L-carnitine in the body by inhibiting the end products of enzyme reaction. This helps to conserve lysine and methionine in the body, as well as reduce the energy consumption of the animal's organism.
