Erythromycin thiocyanate is a crystalline powder, colourless or slightly yellow, with a strong ammonia odour. It is poorly soluble, insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and methanol.

Erythromycin thiocyanate is currently commonly used macrolide antibiotics erythromycin thiocyanate, this product for veterinary medicine, used for the treatment of gram positive bacteria and plasma infection, has been widely used abroad as "animal growth promoter", it with drug, tetracycline hydrochloride and tetracycline as the four big export veterinary antibiotic products. In addition, this product is also used in the synthesis of mainstream macrolide antibiotic products erythromycin, roxithromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, an important intermediate. China began to produce erythromycin thiocyanate from the 1980s to the 1990s, but the output was very low and less than 100 tons. In 200 7, erythromycin thiocyanate became the largest export variety of macrolide antibiotics in China, with the production capacity of more than 10,000 tons. The antibacterial spectrum of erythromycin thiocyanate is similar to that of benzylpenicillin, which has strong effect on Staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus and pneumococcus in gram-positive bacteria, and Pasterella and brucella in Gram-negative bacteria; in addition, it is also effective on mold, rickettsiae, leptospira, actinobacteria and fungi, but not on intestinal negative bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. It is mainly used for serious infections caused by drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and hemolytic streptococcus, such as pneumonia, sepsis, endometritis, mastitis, etc.; it is also used for chronic respiratory disease of poultry and swine mold, and treatment of dogs and cats; and control of green, grass, silver carp, bighead, silver carp and bighead, and streptococcus disease of tilapia.
