Gentamicin, one of the few heat-stable antibiotics, is an aminoglycoside that has excellent therapeutic effects in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics.
Application
Gentamicin acts on bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and disrupting cell membrane integrity. It is effective in treating conditions such as white diarrhoea and paratyphoid fever in piglets. When used in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins or cephalosporins, it produces a synergistic effect on both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Gentamicin can be used in combination with penicillin to combat streptococcal infections, with cephalosporins to treat pneumococcal diseases, and with carbenicillin to treat Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, among others.
