What is DL-Methionine?

DL-Methionine is one of the essential amino acids for the growth of livestock and poultry animals, and it can be widely used in many industrial fields. In the feed industry, methionine is the most used, which can be used as a nutritional enhancer of the feed as well as a feed additive to make up for the balance of amino acids, and it is an important feed additive.

DL-Methionine Physical and chemical properties:

DL-Methionine is a white flaky crystal or crystalline powder with a slightly sweet taste and a distinctive odour. It does not spin and has a pH value of 5.6-6.1 in a 10% aqueous solution. It is stable to heat and air but unstable to strong acids, which can cause demethylation. It is soluble in water, dilute acid, and dilute alkali, slightly soluble in 95% alcohols, and insoluble in ether.

DL-Methionine Functional role:

1. Nutritional effects: DL-Methionine is an essential amino acid that can be used for the synthesis of body protein, improving growth performance. It can also be converted to cysteine, which plays a role in liver protection. Additionally, it is involved in the transfer of methyl and the synthesis of adrenaline, creatine, choline, keratin, and nucleic acids. What's more, it can also provide active hydroxyl groups, supplementing part of the role of choline or vitamin B12. And it is metabolized in the body to produce polyamines, which are very important for animal growth, at the same time, it is also involved in the synthesis of spermine, hemispermine, and other related compounds.

2. Improvement of body resistance: DL-Methionine has the effect of improving body resistance, and its mechanism is not yet completely clear, most of the research stays in the measurement of apparent prevention indicators, resistance indicators generally have obvious changes.

3. Prevention of adverse factors: adding DL-Methionine to the feed can resist the production of various mold-carrying toxins. DL-Methionine can combine with the mycotoxins in the feed to make them less toxic. When added to the feed, it can prevent or control the decomposition of moulds in the feed nutrients. At the same time, MHA can be converted to methionine organism to the decomposition of mycotoxins, so that the production performance can be fully developed.

4. Reducing nitrogen excretion and protecting the environment: it works primarily by reducing plasma urea nitrogen, thereby reducing nitrogen waste and excretion.

Practical applications of DL-Methionine:

DL-Methionine has the same physiological effect as L-Methionine, but the price is lower (L-type is made from DL-type), so DL-Methionine is generally used. When livestock and poultry lack methionine, it will cause stunting, weight loss, weakened liver and kidney function, muscle atrophy, fur deterioration and other symptoms, at this time, you can add DL-Methionine in the animal feed, so as to improve these undesirable symptoms, and play the role of nutritional supplementation and fortification. In addition, DL-Methionine can also be used as a rumen protein source for ruminants and an acidifier for piglet diets, which can reduce heat stress and reduce nitrogen excretion to protect the environment. Adding 1kg of DL-Methionine to feed is equivalent to the nutritional value of 50kg of fishmeal, and the general amount added to feed is 0.05%-0.2%.

Matters need attention about DL-Methionine:

DL-Methionine is safe with normal use and moderate intake. However, excessive intake may cause some side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Therefore, attention should be paid to the source and quality of the product and the recommendations for moderate use should be .
